The Boma off-road wheelchair

Chris Swift’s story is one of inspiration, courage and dedication.

Since suffering a neurological illness in 1995 and being confined to a wheelchair, the 36-year-old Complete Group service user from Milton Keynes has successfully developed his own company designing and making off-road wheelchairs.

Originally with a background in agricultural engineering, Chris’s interests changes towards wheelchair design – particularly off-road, as being in a normal chair made the outdoors inaccessible.

“I tried everything from electric wheelchairs to eight wheel amphibious buggies, but nothing met all my needs,” he said.

“I decided to develop a product to get me back in the countryside.”

So in 2005 Chris set up Molten Rock to design and develop innovative outdoor products, the first of which is the Boma off-road wheelchair, first launched in 2007.

All this, however, wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Telford-based complex care specialists The Complete Group, who have provided Chris with support at home since 1998.

“I began using The Complete Group in 1998 throughout my university years and into employment,” said Chris.

“Without the independence and flexibility of a live-in Personal Assistant support, I wouldn’t have been able to enjoy many of the opportunities that have made Molten Rock possible.”

Despite being a small company, Molten Rock offers a unique product, giving wheelchair users greater freedom to experience the outdoors.

It has benefited from having a close relationship with customers.

“We are still a small business,” said Chris. “But that allows us to have a close interaction with our customers and provide exactly what they require.

“Often our Boma chairs are customised to individual requirements.”

 The small nature of Molten Rock allows gives Chris more freedom.

“Working within Molten Rock allows a greater degree of employment flexibility than I would find in a mainstream role; this was an important consideration when establishing the company,” he added.

Since launching, the company has produced six versions of the Boma, and are now promoting their newest model, the Boma 7.

To compliment their off-road products they began distribution of the Stricker handcycle range in 2011.

Chris has high hopes for the future of the company, beginning with expansion beyond the UK this year.

“This year we intend to expand production in the UK and Europe as well as testing the North American export market,” he said.

“The official UK launch of Striker handcycles takes place at Naidex disability, homecare and rehabilitation show in two weeks, with further shows in the summer.”

Telford-base complex care specialists The Complete Group have raised money for the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) by bidding for two pieces of unique artwork.

Staff members from The Complete Group attended the SIA’s Cornflower Ball at the Midlands Hotel in Manchester, and by bidding for two pieces of artwork they helped contribute the impressive total of more than £40,000 raised by the event.

The two pieces of stunning artwork were created, signed and donated to the event for auction by Brian Travers from UB40 and they are unique and original pieces that Brian personally donated to the event.

First held 14 years ago, the yearly Cornflower Ball brings together legal firms and care specialists throughout the North West of England to raise money for the SIA.

Sally Yandle, Managing Director of The Complete Group who attended the ball and also helped contribute by buying an additional print, said: “As one of the UK’s leading providers of complex health care for disabled children and adults, including those with spinal cord injuries, we are proud of our longstanding involvement with the Cornflower Ball.

“Attending the ball not only enabled us to support the work of the SIA, but also meet other professionals in our field.

“It was a wonderful evening and we were delighted to have had the opportunity to raise money for such a worthwhile cause.”
