The paediatric team at complex care specialists the Complete Group is on a mission to provide top quality care to paediatric clients across the country.

Consisting of Specialist Paediatric Nurses and Personal Assistants (PAs), the team care for Service Users across the length and breadth of the country.

The role of the Specialist Paediatric Nurse is to ensure that care packages run as smoothly as possible ensuring that the clinical issues are managed efficiently and quickly.

This includes caring for the children and families as a whole and also providing support and training to our experienced PAs who are at the front line of care delivery.

The Complete Group understands that clients do not necessarily need expensive care packages that provide full time specialist paediatric nurses from agencies.

Training is delivered to the highest standing, adhering to company procedures, and conforming to the most up-to-date evidenced based care.

As well as providing training to PAs and other appropriate individuals within a paediatric care package on clinical issues, the team also works in partnership with families and liaises with multi disciplinary teams and multi-agency partners.

Specialist Paediatric Nurse Tracey Edwards from Stoke-on-Trent covers the Central Region for Complete.

Before joining the Complete Group, Tracey worked as a Children’s Homes’ IV nurse for 12 months and a Paediatric Intensive Care Nurse in Stoke-on-Trent for eight years before that.

“There are a lot of challenges in the day to day running of the care packages, both environmental and financial,” she said.

“We have to consider the home environment of our Service Users, and the financial constraints that are apparent everywhere at the moment.

“The best thing about the role is being out and about, meeting new people and experiencing new situations. I love training the PAs and teaching them new things and helping them to be competent and happy looking after the children in their care.”

Olupelumi Longe, who covers London and the South East added: “It is challenging, particularly fitting in with parent’s busy schedules, which often means late night visits to at least see the PAs and make sure they are ok.

“However it is great to visit the clients and their families and see that we are making a difference to their lives.”

The teams’ future focus is to provide the utmost care for the children and families in their own homes, ensuring the children remain well in their home environment and reducing hospital admissions when and wherever possible for a happy healthy child to grow and develop.

“Ostensibly our role is to ensure all training, paperwork and paediatric information is relevant, research and evidence based, usable/workable for the package and appropriate for the child and family,” said Mary Gilman, Specialist Paediatric Nurse for the North region.

“We aim to ensure all paediatric training information and paperwork is accessible and extendable to enable a standardised training and competency framework for all paediatric packages.

“This will enable an outstanding care package for paediatrics allowing the Complete Group to grow and be a leader within the field.”

Sally Yandle, Managing Director of the Complete Group, says the paediatric team, working with adult nurses, operations managers, training department, outside agencies, and critically clients and their families, can move forward to become the leading provider of paediatric care services in the country.

Responsibilities:

• First point of contact in providing a comprehensive service to our client’s and care assistants when shifts fail
• Out of hours, on call service from home, one in every four weeks (flexibility required).  This involves filling shifts at short notice, whilst maintaining accurate records of conversations held, ensuring that client and employee confidentiality is upheld at all times. 
• Dealing with difficult calls and complaints whilst on call whilst maintaining a professional and assertive approach
• Data entry to include maintaining staff rotas, amendments and general administration
• Answering incoming calls and dealing with enquiries promptly in a professional manner
• Liaising with managers, colleagues and clients on a regular basis

Essentials:

• Confident and professional
• Proficient In the use of all Microsoft packages

The pilot scheme will see the staff members from The Complete Group undergo a twelve month apprenticeship in Health and Social Care.

The Complete Group, which operates nationwide, supplies tailored complete care packages for disabled adults and children with spinal or brain injuries and other disabling conditions, such as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and muscular dystrophy.

Leigh Rogers, Training Manager said: “The apprenticeship consists of several qualifications including the Level 2 Diploma in Health & Social Care and represents a valuable opportunity for us to invest in our Personal Assistants.

“Whilst our service is already rated as “excellent” by the Care Quality Commission, this additional training and development can only lead to yet another increase in the quality of care we provide.

“We will be working closely with our apprentices and our delivery partner to monitor the pilot scheme throughout the twelve month programme.”

Individuals will gain the accreditation with a mixture of e-learning modules, written assessments and observations from a qualified assessor.

The project is being launched in partnership with a multi-national training firm.

One Complete Group staff member who will benefit from the apprenticeship scheme is William “Bill” Robinson, a Care Coordinator.

He said: “I’ve been hoping to complete this qualification for three years now and so very much appreciate being one of the first.

“The training provided by Complete is already tip top and so I’m sure the apprenticeship scheme will be the same.

“I’m confident in my current role but am looking forward to this opportunity to learn more and am ready to put in all the hard work that I know will be needed.”

Leigh added that the Group hope to extend the scheme in future.

“Providing all goes well, we hope to offer the same opportunity to all of our staff. It has taken a great deal of hard work to get this far but there is still much for the Training Department to do,” he said.
