    Introduction: Setting the scene  

    • Details are given regarding the aims and objectives of the course, the expertise of the trainers and organisational arrangements.
    • Trainees are asked to provide:
      • A driving license
      • Birth certificate and/or passport for verification of identity
      • Bank Details
      • A Personal Profile to share with potential clients
      • Health Questionnaire
    • The Complete Company origins and growth are revealed.
    • The need for assistance for disabled individuals is discussed.
    • Individuals on the course give a brief introduction to themselves. 

    Values of Care

    • The keys to success for one to one care provision are identified.
    • The importance of professionalism is stressed.
    • General individual consideration and practical ground rules are discussed.

    Communication

    Good communication between clients and personal assistants is stressed. The lines of communication between the clients, personal assistant and management are explained.

    Administration

    This component of the course covers general administration required of PA’s. This includes a description of how to claim travel expenses, how to book holidays, completing timesheets and the use of time-solve. Other information is discussed such as contracts of employment, benefits for working at Complete Care Holdings Ltd, and a brief outline of the company history is explained.

    Health and Safety Policies

    Health and safety is viewed from the perspective of the client, the company and the employee.

    Before any client is taken on, a risk assessment of the home environment is undertaken, is updated monthly and any remedial action is undertaken.

    The Causes of Disability

    • Details are given of the nervous system and how injuries or disease can affect it.
    • The impact can have on how an individual thinks, acts and moves and feels is discussed.
    • The health care problems which the client may have to cope with are explained.
    • The psychological implications that are discussed.

    Bladder and Bowel Management

    • The relevant anatomy and physiology is discussed.
    • Specialised equipment used in bladder and bowel management is shown and their use explained.
    • Proven methods and procedures are explained and practised.
    • Issues surrounding the carrying out of this care are discussed.

    Medication

    • How the personal assistant enables the client to take their medication.
    • The ways medication may be given.
    • The common medications used by the client group.

    Moving and Handling

    Is the ergonomics that bring together the task, equipment, environment and the people involved to create systems of work, which the human body can function efficiently, effectively and comfortably without harm or injury to those involved.

    • There are strict regulations regarding the moving and handling of clients. The principles involved are explained and demonstrated.
    • Equipment is shown and its use practised.
    • Techniques used in moving and handling procedures are demonstrated and practised.

    Adult and Child Protection Training

    Elements:

    • How common is adult abuse
    • How to recognise abuse
    • What to do if you suspect abuse
    • Recognising indicators of child abuse
    • Understanding child protection

    Please be aware that this training is a sensitive subject and you may find some of the content disturbing.

    Basic First Aid

    This session involves the remedial action that is required when:

    • A none breathing client
    • A client is bleeding profusely
    • A client has suffered a burn
    • Recognising conditions that may lead a client to become unconscious
    • Managing a client that has been unconscious
    • Recognising and assessing or managing suspected muscular and skeletal injuries
